Timeliness of Clinical Substance Abuse Assessment Standards for DWI Offenses

The Clinical Substance Abuse Assessment for persons with a DWI offense is valid for 6 months.

If an individual does not begin services within 6 months of the completion of the Clinical Substance Abuse Assessment, a new SA assessment is required, in order to ensure the inclusion of the individual’s current level of functioning, severity of identified problems and provision of appropriate level of care.

Existing NC law and administrative code address the associated cost and requirements for these assessments. Individuals must be notified in writing of this policy at the time of the initial assessment.
